Granville Redmond (1871-1935)
Granville Redmond was born in Philadelphia in 1871. His family was hearing but he was deaf either from birth or at the age of two or three due to scarlet fever. His family moved from Philadelphia to San Jose, California.

In 1893, Redmond won a scholarship from the California School of the Deaf and was able to go to Paris where he studied at the Academie Juliean. In 1898, he returned to California. Redmond became famous for his paintings which combined Tonalism with American landscapes. Tonalism used neutral hues such as gray, brown or blue. Tonalism was later superseded by impressionism.
A Landscape by Redmond
It is interesting that Redmond became friends with Charlie Chaplin and helped Chaplin develop some of the techniques that he used in films. Chaplin gave Redmond a studio on his movie lot and collected some of the paintings of Redmond.
